crop insurance scheme

MULTAN: Ministry of Food and Agriculture has asked the Pakistan Insurance Corporation to introduce crop insurance scheme immediately so that forthcoming cotton and rice crop could be got insured.
Source said here on Wednesday that this plan was to be implemented in 1995-96 but it was delayed due to non-availability of necessary funds and uninterested farmers.
Sources said farming community would have to pay at least two percent of cost value of the crop as premium for each crop during Kharif and Rabi season insurance and this facility would also be available to orchard owners.
Crop insurance facility would help the farmers in strengthening them economically in case of calamities, destruction or low per acre yield.
But only 10 percent farmers are agreed to adopt the insurance scheme and 90 percent are reluctant to opt it.
