MAKKAT-UL-MUKARRAMA: King Fahd hailed Saudi officials for organising the first trouble-free annual pilgrimage since 1996, the official news agency SPA reported on Tuesday.

"We were delighted to learn that the rituals of the pilgrimage to Makkah went by without incident or accident, and even without congestion," the king told Interior Minister Prince Nayef ibn Abdel Aziz.

King Fahd, in a message to mark the end of the five-day pilgrimage on Monday, paid tribute to "officials, both civilian and military, for their huge efforts to guarantee the success of the pilgrimage."

Some 1.7 million pilgrims, including just over one million who travelled to Saudi Arabia from abroad, took part in this year's Haj. The foreign visitors started to leave Tuesday.ÑAFP�
