against 5 cops

KARACHI: Sindh Governor, Lt. Gen. (Retd) Moin Uddin Haider has on Wednesday ordered criminal action against five policemen for torturing to death a relative of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

Haider placed under suspension station house officer Chaudhry Nazir Ahmed, sub-inspector Ghazil Khan and head constables Tariq Ahmed, Abdul Hameed and Shabbir Hussain for criminal negligence and misuse of power resulting in the death of Sikandar Ali s/o Mohammad Ali.

The action has been initiated in the wake of judicial inquiry into the cause of death of Sikandar Ali who died on January 9, 1998, in the lock-up of Jamshed Quarters Police Station.

The inquiry held the police official responsible for criminal negligence and brutal misuse of power resulting in the death of Sikandar Ali.

The governor has approved that the accused police officials be instantly placed under suspension, asked to report to the headquarters and they may be proceeded against for departmental as well as criminal action under the relevant laws.
