on hunger strike

HYDERABAD: The president, Al-Abbas Sugar Mills Mazdoor Union, Mir Wah Gorchani, district Mirpurkhas has announced here on Tuesday, that the workers of the mill will stage hunger strike unto death in front of the Hyderabad Press Club with effect from April 10 which will continue for an indefinite period till the acceptance of workers demands.

In a press statement issued here he said that the mill management had converted the mill into a private jail where the workers were being subjected to unlawful compulsory labour.

He said that labour laws had become a misnomer and the law of jungle was prevailing in the mills adding that 200 workers had been dismissed from service, 100 had been served with charge sheets while no compensation had been paid to the bereaved families of six workers who died on duty.

The union had been left with no alternative except to launch a protest movement against the anti-labour policies of the mill management, the statement said.
