Leghari confers with brown
Pakistan, USA
can play positive
role for peace
ISLAMABAD: President Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari has said that Pakistan and the United States could play a very positive role for peace and stability in the region and in the world.
He was talking to Senator Hank Brown who called on him at the Aiwan-e-Sadr on Sunday.
The President said that Pakistan said not want arms race in the region, but could not at the same time ignore its security interests in view of a real threat to Pakistan from India. He said that India must agree to a peaceful solution of the Kashmir problem in accordance with the United Nations resolutions, and hoped that the United States would use its influence for the just cause of self-determination of the people of Kashmir.
He said that Pakistan also wanted peace in Afghanistan under the UN umbrella in which interests of all ethnic groups are taken into account.
The President greatly appreciated the role played by President Clinton and the US Administration in amending the Pressler Amendment and reviving Pakistan- American friendship.
Later, in a Special Investiture Ceremony held at Aiwan- e-Sadr, the President conferred the Award of Nishan-e-Quaid- e-Azam on Senator Hank Brown in recognition of his active and major role for passage of the Brown Amendment which is a step forward in improving the long-standing United States-Pakistan relationship.
Senior officers and diplomats of the two countries were also present on both the occasions.-APP
