PESHAWAR: Dr. Farzand Ali Durrani Vice- Chancellor University of Peshawar on Sunday said that despite tremendous progress achieved in the subject of Geography, it was still facing crises of identity and recognition in the country.

Inaugurating the 8th All Pakistan Geographical Conference organised by Department of Geography Peshawar University under the auspices of Pakistan Geographical Association here at University of Peshawar,. Durrani said "it is one of the most ignored subjects in the country. Truly speaking ignoring Geography is ignoring man and his environment". He said that Geography was one of the key sciences amongst the ancient sciences and the map of Mestiponia (Iraq) was one of the ample examples in this connection. Earlier, it was confined to certain regions, but now its scope had been broadened. He deplored that Geography being the mother of different sciences including Botony and Zoology had been neglected in the past.

Elucidating the importance of Geography,Dr. Farzand Ali Durrani said that keeping in view its importance, the Britishers made the subject compulsory. He stressed for inclusion of the subject of Geogrpahy in the syllabi of schools and colleges.

Speaking on the occasion, President of Pakistan Geographical Association, Professor Dr. Ehsanullah said that despite adverse conditions Pakistani geographers were making their earnest efforts to make Geography regain its status.-APP
