3,360 MW power

generating capacity

added to Wapda in

last 3 years

LAHORE: A total of 3,360 MW power generating capacity has been added to Wapda system in the past three financial years comprising 1,496 MW hydro-electric and 1,864 MW thermal power generating capacity.

With this addition the total system capacity reached 10,853 MW by the end of June 1995 registering nearly 45 per

cent increase over the system power generation capacity at the end of June 1992.

During the financial year 1992-93, installation of another unit at Tarbela Hydel Power Station (Extension) added 432 MW while the new thermal capacity of 227 MW came mainly from Guddu Thermal Power Station. This total addition of 659 MW during the year had raised the system capacity to 8,152 MW by the end of June 1993. The addition corresponded to nearly 8.8 per cent over the previous year's total installated generating capacity.

In the financial year 1993-94, Wapda system witnessed the addition of two more units at Tarbela, each of 432 MW, one Mangla unit of 100 MW and 565 MW thermal capacity at Muzaffargarh and Guddu power stations. This addition of total 1,529 MW hydel and thermal power generating capacity during the year had raised the total system capacity to 9.681 MW at the end of June 1994 which correspond to nearly 18 per cent increase over the previous year's total power generating capacity in Wapda system.

During the financial year 1994-95, last hydel unit at Mangla of 100 MW and 1,072 MW new thermal capacity were commissioned at Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu, Faisalabad and Kotri (Combined Cycle units) and Lakhra Coal Power Station. As such total addition to Wapda system during the year stood at 1,172 MW with the total system generating capacity having reached 10,853 MW at the end of June 1995. This increase is a little over 12 per cent over the previous year's new power generating capacity.

The total installed power generating capacity in Pakistan is 12,728 MW which consists of (10,853 MW) in Wapda's system, 1738 in KESC and 137 MW at KANUPP.

To Wapda projects in the hydel sector presently under execution with a total capacity of 1634 MW are Chashma LOW Head, 184 MW and Ghazi Barotha hydro-power projects, 1450 MW.-APP
