Mentall gunman killed 32 in shooting

HOBART, Australia: A mentally ill gunman who went on a shooting spree on Sunday at a crowded tourist attraction in southern Australia killed 32 people, police said, correcting their previous toll of 33.

Police revised the number of dead in a statement issued here early Monday morning after a coroner visited the scene at the former convict settlement of Port Arthur, about 100 km (60 miles) southeast of the Tasmanian capital, Hobart.

Police gave no explanation for the revision.

Eighteen people were wounded, including some who are in a critical condition, a police spokeswoman told Reuters. The wounded include a U.S. visitor and a Canadian national resident in Australia, she added.

Several of the dead were Asian visitors. "There are some other nationalities (among the dead), but we are not sure where they are from," she said.-Reuter
