HYDERABAD: Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association (SPLA) on Saturday observed black day throughout Hyderabad region, wore black arm bands and held protest meetings in various colleges to condemn murderous attack on Prof. Liaquat Aziz Solangi. Black flags were also hoisted on the college buildings as a mark of protest.

Later, speaking at a joint news conference at the Hyderabad Press Club, the SPLA central president, Riazul Hassan along with Prof. Mohammad Maashooq Baloch, Prof. Raees Ahmed Khanzada, Taj Joyo and others gave an ultimatum to the government that if the accused were not arrested by May 4, the association would launch a protest movement right from Karachi to Kashmore.

They said that teachers believed that all issues should be resolved through talks and added that even during dictatorship, the teachers had struggled for democracy and human rights.

They pointed out that forces opposed to democracy and norms of decency wanted to weaken the democratic government and were trying to create dissension by pitting one group against the other and in furtherance of this objective they had targeted the educational institutions. They also want to disturb schedule of examination beginning from May 18.

Answering a question whether they would boycott the intermediate examinations if the culprits were not arrested, they replied in the affirmative adding that they had given sufficient time to the government to apprehend the assailants.
