RECORDER REPORT

HYDERABAD: A joint meeting of the local leaders of various political and religious parties was held at the residence of Nawab Rashid Ali Khan here on Saturday to discuss the situation arising out of the passage of Sindh Local Government (Amendment) Ordinance.

The Senior Vice President JUP (Noorani) Sindh Allama Dr. Sahibzada Abdul Khair Mohammed Zubair presided over the meeting.

The meeting noted with regret that the democratic government had withdrawn the powers of the local councils and destroyed the autonomy of the local bodies given during the Martial Law regime and thrust bureaucracy over the elected representatives.

The meeting was of the opinion that in order to eliminate unrest and sense of deprivation among the urban population, the Metropolitan Corporations like all the other corporations in the world should have been given more authority but the government had even withdrawn that authority which had been given by the Martial Law regime.

The meeting condemned the government intensions to divide Hyderabad into three parts and accused the PPP government of creating prejudicial atmosphere aimed at ground for the division of Sindh.

The meeting demanded immediate withdrawal of the Sindh Local Government (Amendment) Ordinance and shelving the proposal to divide Hyderabad into three parts.

The meeting also criticised the separation of Karachi Water and Sewerage Board from the Metropolitan Corporation and demanded that the Board and the Building Control Authority should be given under the control of Karachi Corporation and the Local Bodies elections should be held without any delay.
