in road mishap
ABU DHABI: Eleven members of a family from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were killed when a speedy truck rammed into their four-wheel-drive vehicle near the Oman-UAE border, press reports said on Sunday.
The parents and their 8 children aged between -18 as well as one unidentified person believed to be the family member killed in the collision, which was termed as one of the worst traffic accidents involving UAE nationals in many years.
Two other persons travelling in the car were injured and taken to hospital, while the driver of the truck escaped unhurt.
Between 1990 and 1995 around 3,000 people were killed in traffic accidents in the UAE, which is one of the highest road death rates in the world.
The rate of fatal accidents per one million population was around 290, more than three times higher than in Britain.-PPI
