TYRE, (Lebanon): At least 88 people were killed by the Israeli shelling of a UN refugee compound on Thursday in south Lebanon, hospital officials said.

The compound was located in a UN peacekeeping base in the village of Cana, 10 kilometers south of Tyre.

GHALI SHOCKED

UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali was "shocked" and "horrified" by Israel's bombing of the Lebanese village of Cana, his spokesman told AFP on Thursday.

Boutros-Ghali was preparing a formal response to the bombing, the spokesman said.

RAIDS TO CONTINUE

JERUSALEM: Foreign Minister Ehud Barak said Thursday Israel would "reassess" its operation in Lebanon after Israeli shells killed at least 85 refugees in a UN compound, but said the military drive against Hezbollah guerrillas should continue.

"We regret all civilian casualties, especially in the UN compound and in civilian buildings," Barak said.

He said the shelling of refugees in a UN compound in Cana, Lebanon, was "an attempt to react to rockets fired at us" by Hezbollah.-AFP
