BOMBAY: The Indian rupee closed at 34.19/21 per dollar on Tuesday, up from the day's opening of 34.21/24, dealers said.

The rupee was steady for most of the day at 34.22/23 levels. It fell to the day's low of 34.23/25 on dollar on purchases by a state-run bank, dealers said. But this level could not be sustained and the rupee gained ground. The Reserve Bank of India bought dollars at 34.21/22 levels, they said.

"The supply of dollars is good while the demand is not high. The rupee will remain at the same level unless there is a large remittance," a dealer at a foreign bank said.-Reuter
