Environment-friendly Pakistan
Salman seeks Rotarians
help in Govt efforts
KARACHI: Federal Secretary Environment and Urban Affairs, Salman Farooqi, has urged upon the Rotarians to come forward and join hands with the government in its efforts towards developing an environment-friendly Pakistan.
"Environment is more a serious problem for developing countries than the European countries, and it is high time for all of us to realise the perils posed to our future generation due to degrading environment", Farooqi said in his keynote address at the Rotary District's Annual Conference here on Saturday.
On the occasion, a Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the Ministry of Environment and Rotary District 3270.
The MoU was signed by Salman Farooqi on behalf of the Ministry whereas Akhtar Alvi signed for the Rotary.
Under the MoU, the Rotary will supervise and monitor the environment preservation projects of the government.
The Environment Secretary suggested the Rotary to organise students, Mohallah and senior citizen clubs to launch an awareness movement to develop environment-friendly conditions.
"Among the developing countries, we are the luckiest to have some education and a system required for the achievement of desired results". He proposed the Rotary to have its own interaction with the civic agencies.
"In Pakistan, the Environment Division was established in 1982 and in 1992, Pakistan was considered as leader of developing countries on this issue when its resolution tabled at the Earth Summit was passed.
"Still it is a long movement after creation of awareness and lobby for developing conducive environmental conditions", Farooqi said.
After the conclusion of Farooqi's keynote address, the District Governor, Akhtar Alvi, put his proposals and recommendations before the participants who supported the same with vehemence.
Alvi said these are excellent suggestions and Rotary will spare no efforts to execute them.-APP
