Clinton, wife
pay $ 75,000 in
income taxes
WASHINGTON: President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary Clinton paid 75,000 in income taxes on 1995 income of 316,000 dollars, according to tax returns released by the White House on Friday.
Like most Americans, the Clintons paid more than 5,000 dollars more than they owed. The difference will go toward their 1996 payment.
President Clinton's 202,000 dollar salary made up the lion's share of the Clintons' income.
But thanks to a billish US stock market, the Clintons made 80,000 dollars in stock gains last year.
Their investments were placed in a blind trust shortly after the moved into the White House. The president has no say on how the family's investments are managed and does not know what holdings he has, said White House spokesman Michael McCurry.
The Clintons also paid 17,000 dollars in Arkansas state income taxes.
The Clintons prepared a return for their 16-year-old daughter Chelsea who, despite her age, made more than 12,000 dollars last year.-AFP
