PSI approval
KARACHI: The 16th meeting of Agricultural and Food Products Divisional Council of Pakistan Standards Institution was held in the Committee Room of PSI, Branch Office, Karachi, under the chairmanship of Dr. R. B. Qadri, Principal Scientific Officer, PCSIR Laboratories Complex, Kara_chi. Technical experts, consumers and manufacturers participated in the meeting.
The Council approved the following drafts as Pakistan Standard, subject to certain amendments/changes:
i. DPSS for Animal Slaughtering Requirements according to Islamic Law; ii. DPS for Glossary of Terms for meat & meat products; iii. DPSS for Corn Gluten Meal 50 to 60 percent; iv. DPSS for Maize Germ Oil-cake; v. DPSS for Diacalcium Phosphate; vi. DPSS for Flavoured Condiments; vii. DPSS for Soya Protein Products; viii. DPS for Method of Test for Favoured Condiments; ix. DPS for Guide for the Microbiological Quality of Spices and Herbs; x. DPSS for Tamarind Pulp; xi. DPSS for Tomatoes Guide to Cold Storage and Refrigerated Transport; xii. DPSS for Desiccated Coconut; xiii. DPSS for Dried & Dehydrated Fruits (First Revision); xiv. DPSS for Fruit Juice (First Revision); xv. DPSS for Flue-Cured virginia Tobacco; xvi. DPSS for Food Grade Salt; xvii. DPSS for Iodised Salt (First Revision); xviii. DPSS for Toffees (First Revision); xix. DPSS for wheat; xx. DPSS for Colouring Matter used in Food Stuffs; xxi. DPS for Guidelines for procedures for the visual inspection of losts of Canned Food for unacceptable defects; and xxii. DPS PS 56 for Methods of Sampling and Test for Vegetable Oils and Fats (First Revision).
Its following methods have been revised by the concerned sectional committees and the council endorsed these methods:
Test Samples for Oils and Fats, Glossary of Terms Related to Oils and Fats, Animal & Vegetables Oils & Fats - Determination of Iodine value, Determination of Peroxide value, method for determination of Cloud Point, method for Determination of Slip Melting Point, methods for determination of Vitamin-A, determination of Impurities, determination of Fatty Acids Methyl Esters by GLC, determination of Colour, determination of Moisture & Volatile matter Content, determination of unsaponifiable matter, determination of specific Gravity, determination of saponification value, determination of Acetyle Value & Hyroxyl value, determination of Athyl Isothiocyanate, and determination of Acid value & free fatty acids.
The council also adopted the following ISO (Internal Standards Organisation) Standards as Pakistan Standard.
ISO: 1026-1982: Fruit & Vegetable Products- Determination of Dry matter content by drying under reduced pressure and of water content by a zeotropic distillation.
ISO: 5521-1981: Fruits, Vegetable & Derived Products. Qualitative method for the detection of Sulphur dioxide.
ISO: 5515-1979: Fruit, vegetable & Derived Products. Decomposition of Organic matter prior to analysis wet method.
ISO: 5516-1978: Fruit, vegetable & derived products decomposition of Organic matter prior to analysis-ashing method.
ISO: 5517-1978: Fruit, vegetable & derived products - determination of the Iron content-1.10 Phenathroline photo metric method.
ISO: 6490/1-1985 Animal Feeding Stuff - determination of Calcium content Part-I Titri metric method.
ISO: 6490/2-1983 Animal Feeding Stuffs-determination of Calcium content Part-II Atomic Absorption Spectro-metric.
ISO: 6870-1985 Animal Feeding Stuffs - determination of Zearolenon.
ISO: 6654-1991 Animal Feeding Stuffs-determination of Urea content.
ISO: 5506-1988 Soyabean Products - determination of Urease activity.
ISO: 3308-1991 Routine Analytical Cigarette-Smoking machine - definitions and standard conditions.
ISO: 8453-1987 Cigarettes - determination of Total & Dry particulate matter using a routine analytical Cigarettes smoking machine-electro-static smoke trap method.
ISO: 10315-1991 Cigarettes - determination of Nicotine in smoke condensates-Gas chromatographic method.
ISO: 3401-1991 Cigarettes - determination of Alkaloid retention by the fillers-spectrometric methods.
ISO: 10362-1994 Cigarettes - determination of water in condensates Part-2 K K and Fischer method.
ISO: 3550-1985 Cigarettes -determination of loss of Tobacco from the ends.
The Council also discussed and approved the recommendation of oil seeds & their allied products sectional committee that to update the Pure Food Laws, as mentioned in Pakistan Standards Specification 1564-1983 for Refined Sun-Flower Oil to be substituted in Pakistan Pure Food Laws 1965 and PSI to write to provincial governments/AFIN to substitute in their respective regulation.
