School team seeks

KARACHI: Members of the Environmental Protection Committee, Government Muslim Girls Secondary School, Dastagir Colony, called on M. A. Zuberi, Editor Business Recorder, on Thursday and solicited his continued support in their struggle against environmental pollution.

Laeeq Fatima Zuberi, Headmistress, of the School, and Chairperson of the Environmental Protection Committee of the school, said that the print media had an important role to play in the environmental protection programme. She said that the newspapers should produce educational and informative material in simple language so that school going children could easily understand the issue.

She said the purpose of her visit to Business Recorder to meet journalists and urge upon them, to realise the importance of environmentalists message and accommodate their point of view on the subject.

The members of the committee said that they had already planted a large number of trees within the school premises but there was still room for more plantation. " We are short of resources and cannot move further unless some one comes forward and extends his support in our work", said one of the members.

She said that the committee purchased trees, sweet sand, and fertilizer on its own. The students of the school contributed, whatever they could, generously in the fund set up for the purpose and devoted their time unhesitatingly towards the tree plantation campaign. " We have children from middle income group who cannot go on collecting funds and purchasing plants and other things for a longer period. It is now time that someone should see our work and extend financial assistance so that the good work done by our students is not only recognized but kept ongoing", added one of the members of the committee.

A member said that the committee had exhausted its resources and looked towards such organizations "who are actively involve in the environmental protection work to help us and donate to the school a few hundred trees, manure, sweet sand, and germicides. It would keep the good work initiated by our students in progress.

Mrs. Razia Saleem, District Education Officer, Central Female, has formed four groups comprising headmistresses, teachers, students and parents to visit newspaper offices, television station and Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industries and explain to them the work they (students) were doing.

Laeeq Fatima Zuberi, explained the working of her team which has 21 members. The members are: Suraiya A. Huq, Assistant Head Mistress, Khalida Abbass, Senior Teacher, Qamar Jehan and Sughra Begum representatives of parents, Kiran Naz, Bushra Zia, Zar Naz, Asma Khatoon, Sana Abdus Sattar, Tarana Inam, Ismat Riaz, Rema Naz, Muneeza Zia, Arifa Ambreen, Isma Farooqui, Yasmeen Butt, Shahnaz Abdul Aziz, Tasnim Kanwal, Qurat-ul-Ain, Lubna, Samreen, Inam, Zarin Sadiq, and Fauzia Begum.
