Azfar reviews progress
33 schemes under
Karachi Package
completed
KARACHI: A meeting to review the progress of various development schemes in the Karachi Package was held under the chairmanship of Sindh Governor, Kamal Azfar at the Governor House on Thursday.
The meeting was attended by the heads of all the departments and organisations having development schemes in the package.
The Governor directed the concerned departments to further expedite the work for an early completion of projects.
He also directed to make prior arrangements in the coming summer and monsoon season for avoiding frequent power breakdowns, desilting and cleaning of storm water-drains and cleaning the city by involving private sector/non-governmental organisations in collecting the garbage from the city.
The governor was informed that about 33 schemes under the package were completed costing Rs. 1177.79 million. The meeting also discussed various on-going schemes of each department/organisations under the package.
He was informed that the work on University Road Flyover, costing Rs. 320 million has been started and the construction of diversion lanes were completed. The project is scheduled to be completed by December 1998. Similarly the work on the extension bridge over Lyari was in full swing, construction contract has been awarded for Rashid Minhas Flyover.
The extension work on existing Kala Pull on Korangi Road was ready to be awarded for the start of construction. The work on Lilly Bridge, Jinnah Bridge and Mauripur Bridge was also in full swing and is expected to be completed within the stipulated period.
The meeting was told that 47 percent construction work on Jinnah Bridge had been completed and the bridge will be commissioned by the end of this year. A portion from M. T. Khan Road to West Wharf will be operational by April 15.
The meeting was informed that the old Kala Pull was ready for traffic. The work on Liaquatabad Flyover, Clifton Flyover, widening of Lasbela Bridge and link road between Shaheed-e-Millat Road and Teen Hatti Bridge has also been commissioned.
The meeting also discussed various water supply schemes including COD pipeline to Lyari, 100 MGD water supply scheme, pumping conveyance system for balanced quantity of 4th phase under Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme.
Regarding the storm water drainage scheme, it was suggested that the implementation of the project should be done in phases. It was also emphasised that the desilting should be started by KMC under the supervision of Commissioner Karachi.
Regarding the collection of garbage through train, the Governor directed that the collection work should be done with the cooperation of citizens and NGOs.
The Malir Hospital project costing Rs. 540.7 million, has been approved and a plot has been acquired by the Health Department. The construction will be commissioned soon on this project while designing work for Children Hospital in North Karachi was in progress.
The meeting was informed that KPT has planned to start recreational resorts at Keamari under the instructions of prime minister and KPT sport complex will be completed by June 1996.
Regarding the construction of colour fountain at Karachi Harbour, the governor directed the KPT to complete it before January 1997 so that it could be made a part of Pakistan's Golden Jubilee celebrations.
Sindh Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary, Secretaries of Finance, Health, Local Government, Education, Commissioner Karachi, heads of KESC, KPT, KASB, KDA and representatives of KMC and other high officials attended the meeting.
