5 more district
jails to be
set up in Punjab
LAHORE: The Punjab Minister for Jails, Abdur Rehman Khan Niazi Wednesday said that five more district jails would be established in the province in near future.
Talking to newsmen at the passing out ceremony of the two courses at Central Jail Training Institute here on Wednesday, he said that the proposed sites for the new jails are: Vehari, Layyah, Toba Tek Singh, Pakpattan and Okara.
"We have suggested the inclusion of the project in next year's annual development programme (ADP)", said Niazi.
He said that the building of a new jail was not that easy job as the construction of a prison for 500 persons cost Rs 120 million in addition to the expenditures on the purchase of land.
He said that extension work in the existing jails in the province has been carried out in the districts of Sialkot, Gujranwala, Attock, Jhelum, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Multan and Sheikhupura.
He said that the Jail department was trying to get judicial lock-ups transformed into sub-jails.-APP
