notice to A-G

KARACHI: A division bench of the Sindh High Court comprising the acting Chief Justice Mr Justice Abdul Hafeez Memon and Mr Justice Nazim Hussain Siddiqui, taking notice of letter written to acting Chief Justice by one Rasheed Ahmed requesting probe in the death of his son Mohammad Sharif in police custody, issued notice to Advocate General Sindh.

Rasheed Ahmed, resident of Korangi Karachi has stated in this letter that his son Mohammad Sharif was arrested by Zaman Town police on Feb 12, 1995 in connection with FIR No 49 of 95 registered under section 17 (3) of Hudood Ordinance for allegaly committing dacoity.

According to Rasheed his son was harshly beaten by police, cuasing fracture in his left arm and serve injuries on his back and even in these conditions police took remand of his son and did not provide him proper treatment.

The aggrieved father said he and his counsel were making efforts for providing proper treatment to his son when on March 3, 1995 he was informed by the authorities of Central Prison Karachi that his son had expired.

Rasheed expressed his suspicion that his son actually died because of police torture and prayed to the acting Chief Justice to ordered an enquiry in this connection to meet the ends of Justice. The court besides issuing notice to Advocate-General called reports from IV ACM Karachi East and Superintendent Central Prison Karachi.-PPI
