Conservatives

trail in Scotland

EDINBURGH: Britain's ruling Conservatives have slumped to bottom of the poll with Scottish voters, according to an opinion poll published on Tuesday.

A surge in Liberal Democrat support pushed the Conservatives to last place for the first time in more than a year, languishing on an unchanged 11 per cent share of the vote, according to the System Three survey.

Labour held its commanding lead, despite slipping three points to 54 percent. The second-placed Scottish National Party was down one point at 22 per cent.

The survey in 39 of Scotland's 72 parliamentary constituencies was conducted between July 27 and August 1. At the 1992 general election, the Conservatives won 11 of the 72 Scottish seats with 26 percent of the vote.-Reuter
