KARACHI: Iqbal Mehmood SSP South, disclosed here on Monday that more than a dozen diehard criminals, drug mafia and anti-social elements were rounded up in fortnight operation against the criminals from the jurisdiction of various police stations of the district south.

Addressing a hurriedly summoned press conference at his office premises Iqbal Mehmood said that round the clock operation conducted by the vigilant police officials resulted in arrests of 14 police officials, and 31 absconders. These were in addition to recovery of three klashnikoves one rifle, four revolvers 32 pistols one dagger and gold ornament weighing one kilogram, stolen cars, motor cycles, Rs 11,000 in cash , 308 bottles of foreign wine, and 43 kilograms of drugs.

The SSP, in reply to a question firmly denied the criminals had any affiliation with any ethnic or political groups. They were simply criminals and anti-social elements, he emphasised.

To another question relating to complaints about performance of certain police personnel while dealing with the public, the SSP said two cells exclusively for accountability of police had beenset up by the department.

One cell is under the DIG police while other cells would be working under direct control of the SSPs of various districts. These cells will be properly staffed and they will register complaints from the general public about the excesses done to them by any officials. The complaint will be investigated and if found correct, departmental action would be taken against them, he assured.-PPI
