Cotton cloth and yarn
output fell as 33 mills
had closed in April '95
RECORDER REPORT
LAHORE: During the month of April this year 33 textile mills did not function in the Punjab as a result cotton cloth production declined by 5.8 percent and man-made/blended yarn by 11.9 percent as compared to last month.
Production figures of 229 textile mills in the Punjab were now made available as a result of a province-wide survey of industrial production in different sectors of national economy.
Of these, 229 mills 183 are spinning, 21 weaving and 25 composite units.
None composite units, 19 spinning mills and 5 weaving units remained closed during the period. In addition, weaving sections of six composite units also did not work during the month.
According to the data collected through survey and made available to Business Recorder by well-informed sources in Lahore on Tuesday, out of 6134 looms only 3169 (51.7 percent) were utilized.
Furthermore, rotors utilization worked out to be 62.6 percent as only 27,194 out of installed capacity of 43,467 were used and likewise 78.6 percent of spindles capacity was utilized with 3663388 spindles working out of total number of 4657846 spindles installed in the textile mills of the province during the period under survey.
The sources said that the mills purchased 362285 bales of cotton during the month which was 2.8 percent lower than March 1995.
Of this, the mills comsumed 427545 bales of cotton to manufacture yarn, 4.3 percent higher than the last month.
The stock of cotton with the mills at the end of the month was reported to be around 1081019 bales.
The production of cotton yarn during the month was 52339 thousand kilograms, 6.9 percent higher than March 1995.
The mills consumed 4104 thousand kilograms of cotton yarn to manufacture cotton cloth during the month. The mill disposed of 55136 thousand kgs of cotton yarn during the month, 14.9 percent higher than March 1995.
Exports during the month was 26322 thousand kgs which was 47.8 percent of the total sale.
The production of cotton cloth during the month was 14654 thousand meters, 5.8 percent less than the last month.
Of this, 20672 thousand meters of cotton cloth was sold including 11396 thousand meters exported during the month, 9.8 percent higher than the last month.
The production of man-made/blended yarn and man-made/blended cloth during the month was 14304 thousand kgs and 1739 thousand meters, which was 11.9 percent lower and 13.8 percent higher than the last month respectively.
Total employment of cotton textile industry during the month was 125335, slightly lower by 2.0 percent than the last month.
Of total employment, 109339 were production workers and total wages/salaries bill for the month amounted to Rs 265.1 million.
