KARACHI: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet has constituted a permanent committee under the chairmanship of the Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, for periodic review of the economy.

The terms of reference of the committee are:

TERMS OF REFERENCE

i) To review the performance of the economy and, in particular, assess the inflationary situation and growth trends.

ii) To review of macroeconomic policies, evaluate their efficacy in achieving macroeconomic targets and supporting stable growth and suggest measures to re-inforce these policies.

iii) To review savings and investment and suggest measures to improve the rate of national savings investments.

iv) To review sectoral policies, indigenisation programme, identification of bottlnecks in investment and production and suggest measures to enhance sectoral growth.

v) To review social safety nets and suggest measures to strengthen it.

vi) To analyse the structure of foreign trade in the light and new international economic order, suggest targets for diversification of export basket and measures for achieving these targets, in particular for enhancing trade within ECO and with other neighbouring regional organizations.

vii) To suggest any other measure to improve implementation of government policies and programmes designed to support private sector investment and development.

The committee on performance of the economy includes the Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, as its Convener, and Governor State Bank of Pakistan, Ashraf Tabani, Taraiq Saigal, M. A. Wajid Jawad, Anwar Ahmad Tata, Husain Daud, Yousuf H. Sharazi, Shahid Nazir, Kamaluddin Ahmed, Syed Nawab Haider Naqvi Director, PIDE, Dr. Hafiz Pasha, Director, IBA Karachi, Dr. Bashir Anjum, Prof. LUMS, Dr. Tariq Banuri, Policy Institute for Sustainable Development, Dr. S. M. Nasim, Policy Institute for Sustainable Development, Dr. Muhammad Anwar, Chairman, PARC, Muhammad Khan Achigzai, Acting Chief Economist, Secretary, Ministry of Industries and Production, Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Vice-Chairman, Central Board if Revenue, and Secretary, Board of Investment, as its members.

Mohammad Khan Achigzai, acting chief economist, will be the member/secretary of the committee.

Other officials will participate by special invitation as and when necessary.
