Seoul typhoon death toll hits 41
SEOUL: Typhoon Janis finally fizzled out near the east coast of North Korea on Sunday, but left a trail of death and destruction across the southern half of the Korean Peninsula.
South Korea's National Disaster Centre said the death toll rose to 41 after a family of a woman and her nine-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son were crushed to death by a ndslide in Kapyong, 150 km (90 miles) northeast of Seoul.
The centre said 12 others were still reported missing and feared dead in heavy rains that first struck the country on Wednesday.
The meteorological agency said Typhoon Janis, which hit land on the peninsula's west coast at around midnight on Saturday, fizzled out near eastern coastal areas of North Korea early Sunday, leaving less damage in its overland course than had been feared.-Reuter
