ISLAMABAD: The Newspaper Editors Council of Pakistan (NECP) has strongly condemned the attack on BBC office in Islamabad and demanded of the government to take immediate measures to prevent recurrence of such deplorable incidents.

In a statement issued here on Saturday the Secretary General of the NECP Zahir Malik expressed deep anguish over the ransacking of Islamabad bureau of BBC and manhandling of two correspondents.

He said the most lamentable aspect of the incident is that it took place under the very nose of the federal government where officials claim to have made an elaborate security arrangements to protect life and property of the inhabitants. "This shocking incident has, however, exposed hollowness of such tall claims and the government should wake up to fulfil its basic obligation of life, property and honour of the people," he added.

Malik pointed out that the NECP has, on a number of occasions, drawn attention of the provincial as well as federal authorities towards growing trend of attacks on the offices of newspapers and beating and assassination of journalists.-PPI
