Senate session

begins today

RECORDER REPORT

ISLAMABAD: The requisitioned session of the Senate begins on Sunday mainly to debate the situation in Karachi and Sui gasfield operation which is threatened with stoppage by the local tribesmen.

During the last Senate session, Chairman Wasim Sajjad had promised that a full-fledged debate will be held on the Karachi imbroglio which remains uncertain though of late there have been comparative calm stirring up the business activity.

Wasim Sajjad on Saturday, issued orders to the governments of Sindh and Punjab to ensure the presence of MQM senators Nasreen Jalil, Ishtiaq Azhar and Aftab Sheikh and PML (N) Senator Lt. Gen. (Retd) Saeed Qadir.

Early on Sunday the parliamentary parties of the government and the opposition are scheduled to meet and firm up their respective strategies for the Senate session which is expected to last about one week.

On Saturday, the Senate chairman also set up a 11-member house committee, headed by Senator Commander Khalil-ur-Rehman, to present its recommendations on resolving the Sui gasfield problem which has disturbed most of the senators from Balochistan, who support a pro-workers solution.
