Detained MNAs

being given medical

facilities: Rabbani

ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Law Raza Rabbani on Saturday said government was providing every possible medical facilities to the detained parliamentarians.

The minister told journalists that the impression of the leader of the opposition that the detained parliamentarians are not being treated according to the law is incorrent.

"His statement about no medical facilities being given to the (detained) MNAs is yet another attempt to extract political mileage."

He said: "Parliamentarians are under treatment from various specialists and have been given medical cover in jail and hospital alike."

"These MNA's are not produced in the court if the medical specialists have advised them rest," he added.

Rabbani strongly refuted the allegation by the Amnesty International and Human Rights organizations that innocent citizens have been targeted by armed opposition groups.

"Benazir's is an elected government which believes in the supremacy of law and is doing everything and taking all steps possible to ensure that the life, honour and property of the citizens is safe and guarded."

He said the report in fact suffers from a contradiction.

"On one hand it accuses the government of inadequacy in action and on the other it speaks of alleged excesses."

He said the government is accountable and has to act according to the laws of the country.

In reply to a question he said the government has the will and political resolve to take on the terrorists.

"Unlike the governments in the past we have not fallen to the political expediency but have taken steps to safeguard the public."

He regretted the Amnesty report identifying armed opposition groups as source of violence, but did not take notice of the killings of poeple from different ethnic background and also members of law enforcing agencies.-APP
