Anti-pollution drive
against smoke emitting
vehicles from tomorrow
ISLAMABAD: Islamabad traffic police will start anti-pollution drive against smoke emitting vehicles in Federal Capital from Wednesday (August 16) which will be inaugurated by Chairman Pakistan Environmental Protection Council Asif Ali Zardari.
This was stated by SP traffic Islamabad Ch. Abbas while talking to newsmen and traders here at his office on Sunday.
The SP said that they have completed all necessary arrangements for the campaign and banners and posters were also displayed at different chowks of the city. He also appreciated the efforts of media to create awareness among the people about clean atmosphere.
He said that IG Islamabad Asad Mehmood Alvi had constituted a 13 members committee including the representatives of CDA, army and different NGO's. However, only one member will represent Islamabad police.
He said that some people are feeling that this drive is only against the public transporters. He said "this campaign will be implemented on every kind of vehicle".
He said mostly diesel engine vehicles are engaged in emitting black smoke which are being used by the public transporters.
He said that an electronic smoke checking machine will be installed at Khayaban to check the intensity of emitting smoke, but these vehicles which will be checked through this machine have to secure the standard No. 3. However the vehicles which will show above polluted smoke then the standard No. 3 will have to repair their engines.
He said, earlier, they will warn the drivers of smoke emitting cars but after two weeks police will start issuing challans.
He said that contaminated fuel and mobil oil are the main source of smoke emission.
In this connection, he said they have met with the officials of PBS, PSO and Caltex to ensure their assistance and provide clean fuel and oil to the consumers. He added that after some days police will pay visits to all petrol pumps situated.
In Rawalpindi and Islamabad and said if the police finds something wrong they will take legal action against the owners.
He said that police is also conducting survey at different workshops of twin cities but only about 250 shops were declared satisfactory, he also suggested the transporters to repair their vehicles in that workshops.
In the meeting representatives of different transporting agencies were present.
One transporter's representative asked the SP where they are launching the campaign against them likewise they should also take strict action against the fuel and oil seller as contaminated oil and fuel is the main source of smoke. He also alleged the action of police against the transporters in which police removed different accessories of their vehicles.
Later transporters assured their co-operation with police for creating clean environment.-PPI
