PPP govt wants
to restore 1973
constitution
SHAHDADPUR: The Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Abdullah Shah has said that the Government of Pakistan Peoples Party desired to restore the constitution of 1973 according to its original shape, however, in this regard there is a need of two third majority in the assembly for which the government is making all efforts.
Addressing the members of Shahdadpur Bar Association on Saturday, the Chief Minister said that in the last martial law, the unanimously adopted constitution of 1973 was completely defaced.
In 1985, he said that the then Assembly was forced to adopt dictatorial amendments under the conditions that if such amendments were not approved, martial law would not be lifted.
He said that the Government of PPP was trying its level best to make necessary amendment for the time being. In this regard, the Government had made a move that women seats must be restored in the Senate, National and Provincial Assemblies.
The Chief Minister said, 50 percent population of the country consists of women and because of the social conditions, the women although allowed to contest the general elections, but they cannot compete with men so that the women have to be given special treatment by providing separate seats in the Assembly.
The PPP government does not have two third majority either in the Senate or in the National Assembly, which is necessary to amend the constitution. He appealed to the opposition to cooperate with the Government to make such amendments in the constitution, which will restore the original spirit of the 1973 constitution.
Commending on the role of lawyers in the country, the Chief Minister said that the lawyers community had played a positive role for the restoration of democracy in the past and their sacrifices in this regard are the part of the history of democracy in the country.-APP
