medals at

SU convocation

RECORDER REPORT

HYDERABAD: The professors of Sindh University and the students were greatly surprised and disappointed when the Sindh Governor and Chancellor of the Universities, Air Marshal Azim Daudpota (Retd) did not deliver a speech while presiding over the Sindh University convocation 2000 held at Madre Millat Fatima Jinnah Auditorium, Allama I. I. Kazi campus, Jamshoro, here on Wednesday.

All that the governor had to say was that today was the International Women's Day. He also declined to talk to the newsmen and reportedly told the Director of Information that he would talk to them on March 21.

The governor conferred 381 doctoral, master's and bachelor's degrees on the successful candidates of various disciplines besides awarding gold medals to position holders. He also congratulated those students who had won gold medals in various disciplines.

The federal minister for agriculture, live stock and fisheries, Dr Syed Shafqat Ali Shah Jamote, who was the chief guest on the occasion, awarded vice chancellor's medals to outstanding students.

The governor also awarded gold medal to Syed Pannah Ali Shah, former education secretary, Sindh, in recognition of his meritorious services for the cause of education and also to Dr Yar Mohamamd Khawar, a PhD scholar in Sindh University.

The Vice Chancellor, Sindh University, Dr Rasheed A Shah in his address of welcome said that Sindh University had come a long way from just one faculty in 1951 to eight faculties now with 30 teaching institutes and an equal number of departments and centres.

He said three medical colleges and four law colleges were affiliated with the university. He said, besides offering honours, masters, M.Phil and PhD programmes, 47 colleges were affiliated with Sindh University.

Dr Shah disclosed that 15,500 students had been enrolled during the year 1999-2000 session which included 160 students from foreign countries.
