CE to convene moot of S&T commission soon: Javed Jabbar

KARACHI: A meeting of the National Commission on Science and Technology will be convened shortly by Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf to review the whole gamut of the science and technology sector, adopt appropriate measures and formulate new policies.

This was stated on Thursday by Adviser to Chief Executive for National Affairs and Information, Javed Jabbar, while talking to newsmen at a ceremony held for the draw of five air tickets offered by Emirates Airlines in alliance with ANZ Grindlays Bank and AIG New Hampshire Insurance Company at a hotel here.

He said since the head of the government is the chairman of the Commission, its forthcoming meeting will be presided over by the Chief Executive. He pointed out that the commission has not met for the last 11 years.

Javed Jabbar said the present government is attaching top priority to promotion of IT.

The historic decision for setting up a separate Ministry of Information and Technology is reflective of the importance the government is paying to IT sector.

He said the new ministry will be composed of communication, IT and some departments associated with the field of science and technology.

He said the ministry will greatly help create new job opportunities in the economic sector, bring to the fore the people of high calibre and talent and provide avenues for their utilisation.

Javed Jabbar said a practical infrastructure of information and technology will also be announced shortly.

Earlier, talking to newsmen at the NCCA award ceremony at defence library Javed Jabbar contradicted the rumours that the government had plans to change Sindh Governor.

He said it was not correct and the rumours were fabricated and unfounded. "There is no truth in the news. This is fabricated there was no plan to change the present Governor of Sindh," he said.

The Adviser said Sindh Governor Air Marshal Azim Daudpota (Retd) is a decent person and he is performing his duties with dedication and devotion.

He pointed out that Daudpota had successfully accomplished his high profile assignments in the past as he is a devoted person.

About the cable television network, Javed said the government was considering to give cottage industry status to private cable TV to encourage small and medium size investors in this field. APP
