Ban on export of yarn demanded

MULTAN: Kh. M. Jalal Uddin Roomi asked the government to immediately impose ban on cotton yarn exports, if it wants to achieve 9 billion exports target.

He said that exporters of bedlinen garments and other value-added products, desire to boost exports at competitive rates. But in very high prices of the cotton yarn and recent increase in fuel prices, they are unable to meet their export orders.

He said it is imperative to state that export of one kg yarn brings only dollar 2.13 and on the other hand we may easily earn dollar 6.50 per kg through value-added items.

Roomi said that the competitors are selling yarn at a very low price, which has resulted in depressing the cost of all the value-added textile goods. He cautioned that if the government does not intervene and take appropriate steps, the buyers would be lost to the benefit of our competitors.

He said "we make an earnest appeal to the minister of commerce to impose quota on the export of cotton yarn as well as 10 percent export duty on all the counts."
