Academic award council proposed
RECORDER REPORT
LAHORE: Renowned educationist, who has been decorated with Sitara-e-Imtiaz Dr. M. H. Qazi, has said that the economy cannot be strengthened without improving the literacy rate.
He asked the government that instead of formulating new educational policies, it should pay more attention to the implementation of existing policies as through this, we can achieve better results.
Talking to Business Recorder here on Friday, he asserted that a regulatory system should be devised for the educational institutions working in the private sector.
For this purpose, he proposed a provincial council of academic award like institutions working in Britain and other countries. He also proposed that Rs. 1 billion should be allocated for this academic council and private educational institutions should be given funds under public-private partnership.
He said the proposed council should be given authority to allow establishment of new educational institutions.
To a question, he replied that the proposal of the World Bank not to extend subsidy to the educational institutions should not be accepted. He claimed that such a subsidy was given in all the developed countries including the US.
He said people who came to study in England was charged higher and the extra amount was utilised as subsidy for the native. He also stressed the need for elimination of commercialism from the private sector.
