Identification of new bacteria to increase agri production

LAHORE: Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) has identified a group of bacteria, which could be used for the manufacturing of a bio-fertilizer to increase the agricultural production in the country.
This was disclosed by the renowned nuclear scientist, Dr. Samar Mubarak Mand while addressing the 57th annual convocation of the Lahore College for Women, here on Tuesday.
He said with the identification of new bacteria, the use of chemicals in agriculture sector would be reduced significantly. Pakistani scientists and engineers had attained the nuclear capability and at present, they were focussing their research on strengthening the economy of the country, he added.
Samarm said that research so far carried out by the Pakistani scientists had produced encouraging results as new cotton varieties had been developed by the research centres.
The production of the cotton crop had been increased from seven million bales of last year to 11 billion bales during the current year.
He said half of their mission had been achieved by providing nuclear deterrence to the country, while they were working hard to achieve the remaining goal by strengthening the country's economy.
He said rapid advancements were taking place in the field of medicine and Laser technology, which would be used for treatment of various diseases. He advised the students to concentrate on their studies so as to prepare themselves to face the future challenges.
Later, talking to newsmen, he said that Pakistan possessed the latest nuclear and missile technology and was far ahead of India in these fields.
The Principal of the college, in her address of welcome highlighted the achievements of the college students in education and extra-curricular activities.
Degrees and roll of honour were also awarded to the students showing outstanding performance in MA/MSc, BA/BSc and FA/FSc examinations.
