Annan, Turner

NEW YORK: United Nations Secretary General and a leading businessman and donor Ted Turner were awarded Polio Eradication Champion Award by Rotary International, in recognition of the efforts to eradicate polio from the world.

They have been given the award for the measures taken by the United Nations the UN Foundation led by Ted Turner.

The Polio Eradication Initiative was launched by the World Health Assembly in 1988. Unicef, the World Organisation, Rotary International and Turner's UN Foundation, which is a charity set up by Turner. All these organisations remained the major partners in a massive worldwide campaign to immunize children against polio.

The award that Annan and Turner received was established by Rotary International in 1995 to honour heads of state, government ministers and other leaders who have made significant contributions in polio eradication.ÑPPI
