Consumer Rights Day on 15th

LAHORE: The World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) is being observed throughout the world including Pakistan on Wednesday, March 15.

This day would serve as a reminder to the governments of their responsibilities to provide adequate consumer protection in an era of free trade and globalisation.

A day for action, solidarity and celebration by the consumer organisations worldwide, the WCRD marks the historic declaration on consumer rights made by former US President John F. Kennedy on March 15.

The Consumers International (CI), an umbrella organisation of more than 250 consumer organisations worldwide, has selected issues and hazards shrouding the genetically modified foods as the theme of this year's WCRD.

The network, CIs member organisation in Pakistan, would deliver a memorandum to the federal minister for law demanding urgent enactment of national consumer protection legislation in the country.

The CI advocates right to basic needs like food, clothing, shelter, health care, education and sanitation and also the right to safe environment in its conusmer charter.ÑPPI
