Daudpota orders immediate shifting of Sabzi Mandi

KARACHI: Sindh Governor Azim Daudpota on Friday directed the concerned officials to immediately shift the Fruit and Vegetable Market, known as Sabzi Mandi, from its present location in the newly-constructed city premises off Super Highway.

Presiding over a meeting at the Governor House, Daudpota said the allotment of shops and the shifting should be completely transparent and on merit. It was decided that preference in shifting would be given to those who already had shops/business at the old Sabzi Mandi.

Despite a number of surveys conducted to ascertain the actual shop owners at the Sabzi Mandi, the government had not been able to collect correct data about ownership. This has hindered allotment and shifting of shops.

A fresh survey conducted by the Rangers has now been approved and the governor has ordered that the Mandi be shifted on the basis of recommendations made by the Rangers.

Those who attended the meeting on Friday included provincial agriculture minister, Iftikhar Soomro, Chief Secretary of Sindh Zubair Qidwai, Director General Rangers Maj. Gen. Abdul Qadir Baloch, Commissioner of Karachi Shafiq Rehman Piracha, Administrator of the KMC Fahim Zaman, and secretaries of the relevant departments.
