completion of
highways
ISLAMABAD: Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf on Saturday said all on-going highway projects should be completed in time and the private sector should be encouraged to come forward for the construction and maintenance of roads.
He made these remarks while chairing a high-level meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Highways held here, said official sources.
The meeting was attended, among others by the four provincial chief secretaries; Secretary General, Finance, Moeen Afzal; Secretary, Communication Akram Sheikh; Chairman, National Highway Authority, Maj Gen Viqarul Haq Khan Khalid (R) and IG Motorway Police, Iftikhar Rashid.
Gen Musharraf called for adopting an integrated approch towards the construction, maintenance and management of national highways. He asked for taking all requisite measures to ensure the safety of life on these highways.
He emphasised the need for construction of quality roads at the minimum cost. He said far flung areas should also be linked to the network of roads for ensuring their development.
The Chief Executive instructed the concernd authorities to initiate necessary steps for the repair and maintenance of the roads.
The Cabinet Committee on Highways was set up on January 5 during a joint meeting of the National Security Council and the Federal Cabinet. It reviewed various projects of the national highways. Secretary Communication Akram Sheikh briefed the meeting on the long, medium and short-term plans conceived by the National Highway Authority.
He also apprised the meeting of the steps being taken for the improvement of road safety laws and related matters.ÑAPP
