Abolition of price control on beef, mutton demanded
Recorder Report
Lahore: Punjab Livestock Department Secretary Shahab Khawaja has said that the price control on beef and mutton must be abolished like poultry meat so that meat and milch cattle farming could flourish in the country.
He was addressing a seminar on "Development of Livestock and Genetic Resources in Punjab" organised by the provincial Livestock Department here on Saturday.
There is a shortage of better breed cattle that produce large quantity of milk, he maintained. The situation can be improved through efforts to control disease and concentrating on better feed and breed, he added.
The secretary said that the related universities and colleges would have to cooperate with the Livestock Department to achieve the desired objectives so that the increasing demand for milk and meat can be met.
He said that due to non-availability of funds, important projects could not be completed. Therefore, he continued, maintaining data on the cattle and increasing financial resources are the immediate tasks for the department.
He revealed that the government was going to establish a buffalo research institute so that a good breed could be produced to meet the increasing demand for milk and meat in the province.
He urged the authorities concerned to take concrete measures to maintain a balance in demand and supply.
The seminar was addressed by Dr. Prof. Hafiz Abdul Samad, Dr. Sajjad Ahmad, Dr. Manzoor Ahmad Qureshi and other professionals.
