Experts emphasise

on continuing

legal education

ISLAMABAD: Experts from several countries emphasised on continuing legal education to keep the professionals update and conversant with latest legal developments in and around their countries.

Addressing the seminar on 'Continuing Legal Education' arranged by International Bar Association and Pakistan Bar Council here at SC Building on Friday, the experts said that it was essential and indispensable.

Welcoming the guests from Australia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and England, M Bilal, member Pakistan Bar Council said that their participation in the seminar would help in boosting the efforts towards legal education in Pakistan.

Hamid Sharif, legal expert for Asian Development Bank said that to promote legal education ADB had launched special programme named DIAL including a website on the subject to help the keen students and lawyers all over the world.

Hamid Khan Chairman Legal Education Committee of Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) said that the cooperation between International Bar Association and PBC would go a long way to promote legal education in Pakistan.

He said PBC is doing its best to provide better legal education in the country.

Sri Lankan Lawyer L C Seneviratne was of the view that the topic of the seminar was common concern for the legal fraternity in the world.

He said, keeping in view the new developments in a country where new statues are being enacted and old are being repealed, the up to date knowledge is necessary. "We should keep ourselves educated all the time to understand the new legal developments," he said.

In recent years, he said, there has been a large increase in the number of those entering in the legal profession. It has therefore, become necessary to find means whereby the basic necessities relating to practical skills and knowledge necessary to a new entrant in the profession may be acquired by him at the time of his commencement of practice.

Australian experts Armytage highlighted the role of continuing legal education in Australia and read out well prepare on the projects under execution in Australia for promotion of legal education.

Malaysian experts also read out paper on Continuing 'Legal Education'.

The Seminar was attended by the lawyers representing different Bar Associations.ÑAPP
