Seminar on medicines begins

RECORDER REPORT

KARACHI: Liaquat National Hospital, chairman Syed Wajid Ali Shah, inaugurated the Liaquat National Postgraduate Medical Centre's (LNMPC) three-day symposium on "Medicine in the new millennium" at the LNH Convention Centre on Thursday.

Wajid Ali lauded the efforts of the LNMPC faculty in organising the symposium on crucial issues and expressed the hope that deliberations during the course of symposium would greatly contribute in enhancing the knowledge of the medical scientists.

He said those, who are not medical practitioners but are interested in disseminating medical knowledge for the betterment of the people, would find the discussion and presentation of papers of value and substance.

Wajid Ali said since the establishment of the hospital in 1958, it has successfully managed to provide quality medical care at affordable price. "This is despite the fact that no government grant has ever been given to LNH."

Dr. Moiz-ud-Din, medical director, spoke about the achievements hospital has made during its long journey of 42 years.

He said; "We focus on performance and compassion. Today the hospital has more than 130 residents in training and we have an active school of nursing for a three-year programme."

He also spoke about the newly built convention centre, which includes a 400-seat state-of-the-art auditorium and seven ancillary conference rooms, providing a total seating capacity for 800 people.

Shortly a new emergency room will be inaugurated. "A new operating theater complex, nurses hostel and library and a recreation centre are some of our new projects likely to be completed this year," he added.

Dr. Naseem Salaudin, chairperson of the symposium committee, said postgraduate and continuing medical education are fundamental to good quality health care.

The symposium is being participated by Pakistani and foreign medical experts. It will continue till January 29.
