Daudpota opens Dr M.H Punjwani School for Blind at Ida RieuR

KARACHI: Sindh Governor Azeem Daudpota on Thursday inaugurated the Dr. Muhammed Hussain Punjwani School for the Blind at Ida Rieu and extended his support to welfare work of the special children being done by the non governmental organizations.

The school is built at a cost of Rs 30 million donated by Begum Nadira Punjwani, daughter of the late Dr. Mohammed Hussain Punjwani. The donation is the biggest ever made to Ida Rieu by an individual since its coming into being 1920.

The school is equipped with quality furniture and teaching aids. It will be upgraded to the level of a degree college at a later stage.

The governor said, "I offer my congratulations and pray that Allah in his mercy would reward her and the late Dr. Punjwani for such a magnificent donation for the cause of education but importantly for those who are physically deprived. I also offer my felicitations to Jam Saheb and his colleagues for the wonderful, dedicated work they are doing."

He said that he was happy to see that the institution had continuity of people in charge of the institution. "Jam Saheb's father was actively associated and he is now its president, Hatim Alvi, one of the close associates of the Quaid-e-Azam and a leading freedom fighter remained Ida Rieu's president for 50 years and his son, Mehar Alvi now is the Hon. Treasurer and Chairman of the Building Committee. Your very active principal Miss. Qudsia Khan came to the institution as a teacher and now has been its principal for 30 years."

Speaking on the occasion Begum Nadira Punjwani said that the long and meritorious history of the school, excellent services to the disabled and the happy children inspired her in joining this noble cause.

Jam Amir Ali, and Mehar H. Alvi also spoke on the occasion.

A large number of people from different walks of life attended the inauguration ceremony. Among others were provincial minister for law and parliamentary affairs, Barrister Shahida Jamil, provincial minister for agriculture Iftikhar Soomro, Dr. Ataur Rehman, Begum Shehnaz Haider, Mrs. Minwala, S. S. Jafri, CPLC chief Jamil Yousuf, and KPT chairman Admiral Khalid Mir.
