Rights of small farmers to be protected

MULTAN: Chief Executive Gen Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday said the government will do all to protect the rights of small farmers. He said this while addressing local farmers at the Ruknpur bridge of the Shanaal Distributary, some 90 kilometres off here. The Chief Executive regretted that some farmer with big land-holdings were involved in stealing canal water. He said, as a result, poor peasants, with small land-holdings, were deprived of their due share in the irrigation water.ÑAPP

Sarfaraz, Tauqir meet President

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Northern Areas Abbas Sarfaraz Khan called on President Rafiq Tarar here at Awan-e-Sadr on Tuesday. The minister remained with the President for sometime and discussed various matters of national importance. The Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board, Lt Gen Tauqir Zia, also called on the President and discussed matters pertaining to cricket. The President hoped that the PCB would adopt special measures for promoting cricket and encouragement of talented young players in the country.ÑAPP

ST begins computer courses

KARACHI: The new session for computer courses at Ziauddin Computer Institute, being organised by Sunni Tehreek (ST) will begin soon. An announcement by Sunni Tehreek said here on Tuesday that free computer courses are being organised for poor and destitute students. It further said that admission to these courses will be made on the basis of merit.ÑAPP

12 arrested

KARACHI: Karachi police, during its special campaign, arrested 12 persons involved in various crimes from various parts of five districts during the last 24 hours. According to police it recovered five pistols, one repeater besides some narcotics, liquor and other stolen property from the accused.ÑAPP

Governor NWFP to open Chanda Deep well

ISLAMABAD: NWFP Governor Lt Gen Muhammad Shafique (Retd) accompanied by Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Usman Aminuddin will inaugurate the spud-in ceremony of newly discovered well in Chanda (Kohat) on January 29. The ceremony of Chanda Deep Well-I and the visit of first discovery well Chanda, Shakardara Kohat in (NWFP), is being organised by the management of Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL).ÑAPP

Punjab, NWFP receive showers

LAHORE: Induced by a low pressure system and brought along by strong winds, many parts of the Punjab and NWFP received scattered but widespread showers during wee hours and on Tuesday morning. More thunderstorms and rain are expected specially in the region falling between Islamabad and Gujranwala but Met experts don't expect heavy rains from the second Westerly system reaching Pakistan in the new millennium.ÑAPP

JWA to support child welfare schemes

KARACHI: The Japanese Women's Association, Karachi, in an impressive ceremony here on Tuesday reiterated its commitment extanding all possible support for the children of Pakistan. Noriko Tsuji, JWA-Karachi, president, addressing the event held to present gadgets worth Rs 80,000 to the Society for the Rehabilitation of Special Children (SRSC) said the funding was generated on self help basis by the JWA members, who despite situational changes in Pakistan, managed holding the annual charity bazar in November last.ÑAPP
