RECORDER REPORT

KARACHI: President Mohammad Rafiq Tarar will inaugurate the third three-day symposium on "Medicine in the New Millennium" being organised by Liaquat National Hospital at its symposium centre on January 27 to 29.

Liaquat National Hospital, Medical Director Dr. Moiz-ud-Din, addressing a press conference on Tuesday at the Convention Centre, said that the symposium would initiate discussion on a number of issues, including those of medical ethics, and provide insight into problems calling for solutions.

He said that medical scientists from Pakistan and abroad would present more than 175 papers, conduct hands-on-workshop, a tele-conference on hepatitis via satellite link with Rush Presbyterian, St. Liukes Hospital in Chicago, USA, and a debate titled "Eastern Concepts vs Western Concept of Medical Ethics" between two teams of eminent scholars and professionals.

The symposium will feature 20 academic sessions, 15 workshops and special plenary session "Dr. S. A. Hussani Oration" on organ transplantation.

Syed Wajid Ali Shah, founder-chairman of the LNH, said that the hospital is being managed by professionals on most modern lines. "It does not receive any grant from the government", he added.

The hospital provides complete medical care to patients on economical rates and does not run on commercial lines, Shah said.

The 650-bedded hospital also provides facilities for post-graduate medical education and at present about 130 residents are in different stages of their education/training.

Others who addressed the press conference included Dr Naseem Salahuddin, Dr K Z Hashmi, Dr Salman Faridi, Dr Zaki Idrees, and Dr Rasheed Ahmed.
