Cleanliness drive
KARACHI: The eight-day cleanliness campaign of District Municipal Corporation (DMC), Karachi East, continued on Sunday, during which removal of garbage, street lights' repair and clearance of hoardings was carried out, it was officially stated. Tariq Road has been selected as a model area for the cleaning campaign. Sixteen zones have been created in District East where an equal number of monitoring officers of DMC East are deputed to supervise sanitation, sewerage, street lights repair, encroachment removal work. Deputy Commissioner, East Khusro Pervaiz, visited the site at Tariq Road on Sunday.ÑAPP
EPB exhibition-cum-seminar
PESHAWAR: The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), Peshawar, has arranged an exhibition-cum-seminar on 'Women entrepreneurship in NWFP on Tuesday at Peshawar Garrison Services Club. The NWFP Minister for Education, Information, Culture, Tourism and Archaeology, Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gillani will be the chief guest at the inaugural session of the seminar.ÑAPP
Use of polythene bags banned
HYDERABAD: The district Magistrate, Hyderabad on Saturday Under Section 144 Cr. P.C. prohibited the manufacturing, import, sale or use of polythene bags within the limits of his district with immediate effect. The order shall remain in force for a period of 60 days.ÑAPP
Three killed in road mishaps
DERA GHAZI KHAN: Three persons were killed in two different incidents in and around the city during the last 24 hours. In the first incident, a rashly driven tractor trolley loaded with sugar cane overturned in a deep patch at Murghai Morr, district Rajanpur. As a result of which Muneer Ahmed (driver) and Muhammad Akbar died on the spot. In another incident, a speeding car collided head on with a truck near Sugar mills Rajanpur. As a result a car inmate Shujaat died on the spot, while his three accomplices sustained serious injuries.ÑAPP
Bid to smuggle suji foiled
DERA GHAZI KHAN: Border military police along with district food controller foiled a bid to smuggle suji (flour) to Balochistan and arrested the truck driver. A truck (LIT-9397) was carrying 250 suji bags to Balochistan from Faran Flour Mills, DG Khan, when it reached near check-post of Rakhni Moonth, border military police signalled to stop and seized 250 suji bags after search. The police arrested Raz Mohammad, a truck driver, and took into possession Suji bages. Meanwhile, Deputy Director Food has suspended the wheat quota of Faran Flour Mills.ÑAPP
Police raid gambling den, 9 arrested
RAWALPINDI: Police have arrested nine gamblers during a raid at a gambling den here at Dhoke Ratta Amral. CIA police received an information that a gambling den was being run at Babu Lal Hussain Road, Dhoke Ratta Amral. Police conducted a raid at the den and arrested nine gamblers red handed. They also seized money and four wrist-watches which were at stake during the gambling. The accused identified as Muhammad Rehman, Muhammad Riaz, Khalid Mahmood, Imran, Babar, Tariq, Abdul Qayyum, Zar Gul and Muhammad Azam. Meanwhile, Wah Cantt police arrested a proclaimed offender Muhammad Ashraf s/o Lal Khan.ÑAPP
HBL workers call for referendum
KARACHI: Habib Bank Workers' Front urged the bank management on Sunday to hold a referendum for employees. The call was voiced at a meeting of provincial working committee presided over by central president Habibuddin Junaidi. Office-bearers of the front from Karachi, Larkana, Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad and Sukkur divisions attended the meeting which discussed the problems facing HBL workers. The meeting delpored the tactics being used by the opponents in connection with the holding of referendum in the bank. The meeting also expressed concern over downsising in the bank by the previous management.ÑAPP
Married woman burnt to death
LAHORE: A married woman died of burns at Ghari Shahu here on Sunday. Jamila Begum resident of Allama Iqbal road Ghari Shahu, was preparing meals on stove when it suddenly burst injuring her seriously. The ill-fated woman was rushed to Mayo Hospital in critical condition where she succumbed to burn injuries. She was the mother of two children.ÑAPP
Obituary
KARACHI: Syed Rizwan Ali, the elder brother of former news editor of APP Aziz Husain, who died of protracted illness last night, was buried here Sunday at PECHS graveyard, family sources said. Syed Rizwan Ali, 87 survived with two boys and three girls. His soyem will be held at Jamia Masjid Nazimabad on January 25. APP
Walk against cancer
LAHORE: A walk aimed at creating awareness among the masses about cancer was organised under the auspices of Cancer Research Foundation of Pakistan. The walk was participated by the people belonging to different walks of life including artists, sportsmen, students, children and doctors. Election schedule announced
FAISALABAD: The schedule for the elections of the Agri-varsity B&C Employees Union for the year 2000, has been announced. According to a press release issued here Sunday, Dr Laiq Lodhi, associate professor department of Animal Re-Production has been appointed as election commissioner while Farooq Ahmed lecturer department of Agri-Entomology, will act as deputy election commissioner. The candidates have been asked to submit their nomination papers by January 28 while the election will be held on February 10. APP
Soyem
KARACHI: The soyem of Ishrat Husain, uncle of daily "The News" staffer Fasahat Mohiuddin will be held at III F-2/6, Nazimabad, between "Zuhr" and "Asr" prayers on Monday. The deceased expired after a protracted illness on Saturday morning. He is survived by a widow, a daughter and four sons. APP
