T A MALIK
ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Industries has directed the ghee manufacturers to use prescribed tin plate in the packing of ghee and edible oil to protect these items against decay and contamination, sources said here on Friday.
The ministry took serious note of the consumer complaints that the manufacturers are using sub-standard tin plates in ghee packings. These plates develop rust, which after some time gets mixed with ghee and oil posing serious threat to human health.
The ministry has directed that ghee in sub-standard tin packing is not fit for human consumption. The manufacturers have been given 30 days after which specified period strict action would be taken on the complaints.
Sources said that most of the ghee makers are using sub-standard tin plates.
According to medical experts, rust after mixing with ghee damages liver, affecting its functioning and causing hepatitis B and C. It also damages stomach and particularly affects the function of heart.
Sources said that the Ministry of Health has also requested the Ministry of Industries to take action in this regard.
Sources said that the Ministry of Industries would launch a campaign against ghee manufacturers not following the quality control laws.
