Lahore Collectorate Y2K compliant

LAHORE: The General Sales Tax Collectorate has become Y2K problem ready with the help of computer professionals from the Central Board of Revenue (CBR). A spokesman of the collectorate said that the collectorate has modified or updated 2.5 million lines in the source code, about 100 date-bases, 50 reports and 25 forms to counter the possible problems due to millennium bug. He said that the collectorate's Y2K task force conducted mock exercises in the first three weeks in last month to ensure quick restoration of normal data processing during the millennium which started on Saturday.ÑAPP

PRCS spends Rs 37 million

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) spent Rs 37 million in 1999 on its humanitarian programmes within country and over 500,000 people benefited from these programmes. Chairman of PRCS, Syed Shahid Ali said the year 1999 was significant because of its large scale relief operation in Balochistan which was struck by flash floods in March 1999. The chairman said during 1999 the society involved all its branches for uniformity of its action programmes. He said more emphasis was placed on the training of Red Crescent staff and volunteers to prepare them better for first aid and disaster preparedness.ÑAPP

Condolence

KARACHI: Director Information of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Saifur Rehman Grami and Deputy Director Hasan Imam Siddiqi have expressed their grief over the death of father-in-law of Chairman Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), Shaikh Manzar Alam. A statement of KMC said on Friday that the two officials prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed soul in peace and give courage to the bereaved family to bear the loss.ÑAPP

Car dealer robbed

MULTAN: A new un-registered Toyota Hiace wagon was lifted from the house of a car dealer here on Friday. Police told newsmen Saturday that Bashir Ahmad, a car dealer, resident of district leyyah, parked his three new Hiace wagons in the courtyard of his rented house, 580/E Shah Rukn-e-Alam Colony here. When he got up early in the morning for "Sehri," he was shocked to find one of his wagons, engine No. 211752159 chassis No. H 6120-01287504 was missing. An FIR has been registered at New Multan Police Station under section 381-A PPC and investigations are underway.ÑAPP

Kasi visits PIMS

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Health, Abdul Malik Kasi on Friday visited Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) to enquire about the health of injured of Kalar Kahar accident. The minister also issued directions to the hospital administration for special treatment of the patients. The administrative Director, PIMS, Mahmood Qureshi was also present on the occasion.ÑAPP

Dacoity bid foiled, one killed

SAHIWAL: Armed bandits tried to storm a wheat godown at Kamir, and shot dead a man when the guard and his guest offered resistance. According to reports the brother-in-law of the godown chowkidar Sharif, Mansha was also present at the wheat godown late night when three dacoits tried to raid and rob the premises. On meeting resistance the accused opened fire, killing Mansha on the spot, and sped away. Kamir police have registered a case against the culprit.ÑAPP

Highway holdup

OKARA: Two dacoits in a car waylaid and looted another motorist in broad daylight, and decamped with the booty. According to details, the car driven by the accused stopped a motorist, a local trader, on the National Highway in the daytime, snatched cash amounting to Rs 0.5 million, and drove away. The trader was travelling with his father in the car. Nobody was reported hurt in the incident.ÑAPP
