Agri varsity VC to work out strategy to increase overall crop output

FAISALABAD: Professor Dr. Riaz Hussain Qureshi, Vice Chancellor, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad has announced to work out a strategy to increase the overall production of major corps by introducing modern irrigation techniques, providing certified seeds of high yielding varieties, wiping out malpractice in the pesticides and fertilizer products and by appropriately solving the problems of water logging and salinity in the selected areas.

Talking to agriculture scientists and experts, here on Saturday, he said that at the beginning of the new century and new millennium, let us affirm that, with the blessing of the government, agricultural scientists would do their all out efforts to meet the food requirement for the increasing population within a period of five years.

In this regard some comprehensive research works have already been started by establishing research groups comprising talented researchers and scientists of the allied disciplines of agriculture, he added.

The vice chancellor admitted that currently, Pakistan was not meeting the over all food requirements of its people owing to a fall of production in agriculture on the one hand and high growth of population on the other.

He stressed upon the agriculturists to play their role in meeting the challenge of food and fibre needs so as to bring out of the economic mess.

He said we had to achieve all this while maintaining out natural resources and the environment. He said we had a land fertile and full of resources of all kinds which were significantly higher than the domestic demand.

We have talented manpower in the form of farmers, workers, researchers and agricultural experts who can fulfil the dream of self-sufficiency in food.

He said being the vice chancellor of the country's leading university, he has done a comprehensive planning to meet the challenge of self-sufficiency in food by improving the agricultural education and research in accordance with the demands of the 21st century.

Meanwhile, Dr Riaz Hussain Qureshi felicitated the whole nation at the emergence of new millennium and called upon them to join him in his new policies and plans for a prosperous Pakistan.
