Mehran Bank scam: Leghari ready to face accountability

Recorder Report

Lahore: Millat Party President Farooq Leghari has refuted the allegations of his involvement in the Mehran Bank scandal and said that he was ready to face accountability.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he said that he had sold his lands legally and the buyer had paid the cost price of the land through a crossed cheque of Mehran Bank.

He said that he had already undergone thorough investigation and faced a court trial and still he was ready to face any kind of inquiry in this regard.

Leghari maintained that his family has 521 acres out of which only 37 acres belong to him, while the rest of the lands belong to his sisters and mother. He said that Mian Nawaz Sharif, during his regime, had levelled baseless allegations of selling land at a price higher than its actual price.

He accused Nawaz Sharif of establishing a media team that had launched a campaign against him. He said Benazir Bhutto had assigned this responsibility to Naseer Ullah Babar and he too had spread disinformation about him, he added.

He said that a number of corrupt journalists wanted to save the corrupt leadership of Pakistan Muslim League and People's Party. He alleged that some of the journalists were on the pay-roll of the PML and demanded of the CPNE and ANPS to take action against them.

Leghari said that both the major political parties, in order to give bad impression to the world community, were trying to defame the political process in the country.

He expressed the hope that the government will not sign the CTBT till the time he presents his point of view on this vital issue.
